Rishikesh is the starting point for most Kedarnath trips. The journey is a long mountain drive followed by a trek, so plan it carefully.
The route
From Rishikesh the road follows the Ganga to Devprayag, then the Alaknanda and Mandakini valleys via Rudraprayag and Guptkashi to Sonprayag, roughly 210–220 km. Expect 8 to 10 hours of driving, more in heavy traffic or rain. From Sonprayag, shuttles run to Gaurikund, where the trek begins.
The trek
The trail from Gaurikund to Kedarnath is about 16–18 km with a steady climb. Fit walkers take 6 to 8 hours; ponies, palkis and pithus (porters) are available. Helicopter services also fly from helipads around Phata, Sirsi and Guptkashi; book only through the official channel.
How many days?
Allow at least 4 to 5 days from Rishikesh: one to drive up, one to trek, one for darshan and the walk down, and one to drive back. Our Kedarnath Yatra from Rishikesh is planned this way, and the Do Dham adds Badrinath.
Before you go
- Registration for the Char Dham is compulsory; do it online before travelling.
- The temple usually opens around late April or May and closes after Diwali.
