White-water rafting on the Ganga is the most popular adventure in Rishikesh, and most trips start a short drive upriver from Tapovan. Here’s how to choose the right one.
The main stretches
- Brahmapuri to Rishikesh (about 9 km): short and gentle. Good for first-timers, families with teenagers and anyone short of time.
- Shivpuri to Rishikesh (about 16 km): the most popular trip, with named rapids like Roller Coaster and Golf Course and a chance to swim in calm stretches.
- Marine Drive to Rishikesh (about 25 km): longer, with more rapids. Half a day on the water.
- Kaudiyala to Rishikesh (about 35 km): a full-day trip for confident swimmers and groups who want the biggest rapids.
When is the season?
Rafting usually runs from about September–October to June. It stops during the monsoon, typically July and August, when the river is high and the authorities close it. The season guide explains what each month is like.
Safety and what to wear
- Book only with a licensed operator that gives every rafter a helmet and life jacket and a safety briefing before you start.
- Most operators have a minimum age (often around 14) for the longer stretches.
- Wear quick-dry clothes and sandals or old shoes with straps; leave phones and valuables at the hotel.
- Carry a change of clothes and a towel for the ride back.
