The monsoon turns the hills around Rishikesh a deep green and fills the waterfalls, but it also closes some activities. Here’s what to expect.
What’s different
- Rafting stops: the season runs from 1 September to 30 June, and the river is usually closed in July and August, sometimes longer in heavy years. In 2025 it reopened on 27 September.

- Fewer people and lower rates in hotels and cafés.
- Yoga continues; many schools run courses year-round.
Road safety
Heavy rain can cause landslides on hill roads beyond Rishikesh. Check the weather and road status before travelling towards the Char Dham, and keep buffer days in any trip into the hills.
The Kanwar Yatra
During the month of Shravan (July–August), huge numbers of Kanwariya pilgrims walk to Haridwar and Neelkanth. Roads are diverted and crowded; plan around the peak days.
